Cloud & Enterprise
Architecture

We design cloud, hybrid, and multi-cloud systems that are secure, reasonable to run, and understandable to the people who operate them, for federal programs and commercial companies.

When clients call us

Usually one of a few things has happened. A migration decision is coming up and nobody agrees on the approach. The cloud bill has grown faster than the business. Or years of projects and acquisitions have left systems that do not fit together. Sometimes the architecture is fine and the team wants someone senior to review it before a large commitment.

We work with technology leaders and the executives they report to. The goal is a design that your own teams can build and run after we leave.

What the work includes

Understanding what you have

We review the current systems, the principles behind them, where the money goes, and where technical debt is slowing teams down. We talk to the people who run things day to day, since the diagram on the wall is rarely the whole story.

Designing the target

We draw the target architecture for cloud, hybrid, or multi-cloud, based on recognized standards and on what your team can support. The design covers security, data, integration, and cost, with the trade-offs written out.

Planning the migration

We sequence the moves, estimate cost and risk for each, and recommend what to build, what to buy, and what to hand to a partner. Plans are staged so that something useful is delivered early.

Staying involved in design reviews

Many clients ask us to sit on an architecture review board or review designs as projects start. This keeps teams working toward the same principles and catches problems while they are still cheap to fix.

Where we have done this

  • 70% lower cost and provisioning time. Moved a software company’s internal environments to the cloud, and cut product rollout timelines by about 30% in the first year.
  • $90M+ annual market opportunity. Started the cloud enablement effort that produced hosted versions of the company’s core products.
  • Authorization in six months. Directed a federal migration to FedRAMP High AWS GovCloud that earned an authority to operate in six months and saved $3.7M+ a year.
  • Standards and credentials. AWS Certified Solutions Architect, holder of U.S. Patent 9,588,795 on monitoring virtualized resource use, and contributor to cloud standards at the Object Management Group and IEEE.

Next step

If you have a migration or architecture decision coming up, tell us where your systems are today and where you need them to go. We typically respond within one business day.
